Espoo, Finland, November 7, 2017. Circular Devices, Ltd., the Finnish startup behind the PuzzlePhone modular smartphone, has joined a consortium of 20 European companies and institutions led by the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM), to support a Horizon 2020 circular economy project. The EU Post-Consumer High-Tech Recycled Polymers for a Circular Economy project is a multi-year, multi-stakeholder demonstration focused on the feasibility of circular plastics supply and value chain, specifically related to waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) plastics.
竞彩足球比分直播500Recycling the WEEE plastics is one of the missing links within circular economy. Most of this plastics end up incinerated or “downcycled” in applications such as in plastics timbers. Managing plastics as waste is highly inefficient.
The PolyCE consortium brings together 20 key players from research, business, and technology. The consortium includes KU Leuven, TUB, SITRAPLAS, ONA, UGent, Pezy, I-Factory, KunststoffWeb, Whirlpool, TUON, ECODOM, EEB, Philips, UL, MBA, Circular Devices, P&T, Fraunhofer, UNU, TECNALIA. The consortium represents the expertise throughout the supply and value chains of the high-tech plastics and will focus on reducing the value loss by designing feasible changes within the supply chain.
“The project is an opportunity for a full scale closed loop pilot for exposing the procurement and manufacturing benefits. In the case of hardware we are expecting to find out that closed loops will create a new kind of resource independency which will both stabilize the business environment (price stability, reducing geopolitical risks etc) and in the end represents an improvement on the bottom line.” says Alejandro Santacreu, Circular Devices CEO.
PolyCE, with a total budget of 9.45 million euros, will help to strengthen the market for recycled plastics and provide guidelines for designing the new recycled plastics electronic products. Selected target cities and their green public procurement initiatives will be involved for further accelerate the process.
Circular Devices Ltd is creating a comprehensive partner network to use and promote the use of PCR plastics. Furthermore to support the effectiveness and sustainability of the future electronics, Circular Devices Ltd is promoting the reshoring of the design, engineering, and manufacturing. Reshoring will not only enable circular plastics but also make the circular economy loops more effective. Circular Devices Ltd has been working on the vision of the PuzzlePhone and PuzzlePhone Open Standard since late 2014 and is now in the process of securing operations and funds for further progress. The whole ecosystem of the PuzzlePhone is based around the breitungdesign.compatible Open Standard. There are several elements to develop and support this Open Standard.
PuzzlePhone, upgradeable, sustainable, incredible!
